Good news to report already.  Mikey has at last started to come out of his shell.  He's wagging his tail to beat the band and he happily romps and plays with a few of his foster siblings (we are proceeding slowly). He's much more happy and upbeat yet he still is a bit overwhelmed with the transition.  Looks like he's on his way to becoming the pit bull he was meant to be.  Yeehah!

Mikey has joined up with Buster this past week.  His story is not as bad as some but equally as sad.  This handsome gentle boy was surrendered to us by his owner.  Unfortunately Mikey is a shy timid boy who needs work on building his confidence and will benefit from social experience so that he can learn that life is good and safe.

His first night with me was difficult for him as well as myself.  I attempted to coax him out of my car and eventually had to pick him up and carry him in the yard. He sat at the gate whimpering and desperately trying to nudge his head between the gate opening obviously trying to escape the strange yard he was in.  Any attempt I made to approach him caused him to move away from me or, if I was lucky enough to get to him and hold his collar, he would fall to the ground curling up and urinating in submission.  He frantically paced the yard for what seemed like an hour, obviously overwhelmed by his new surroundings and smells. I watched and walked along with him, gently offering an occasional kind word. When I was finally able to approach him I literally had to drag this thin, panic stricken dog into the house and place him in his crate.  He didn't eat a thing that first night.  I actually believe he "slept" in a sitting position, afraid of lying down on his blanket.

Today Mikey is more interactive, running with his foster sister puppy Snickers.  His tail is up a bit and I get some wags out of him, and his appetite is back!  He came into the house on his own today ( I did have his food bowl in my hand to make the idea worthwhile).  He now lays on his blanket and is perfect in his crate (and we have learned he is totally housebroken).  Mikey gave me kisses today too!

Mikey did well with his vet visit today to get his heartworm test (he's negative).  He's a bit scared of tile floors and puts the breaks on but we just keep on going.  He seems to do well with his car rides.  Let's hope Mikey continues to make more progress.  We'll keep his bio updated.  Even though he's struggling, I am confident Mikey is going to be just fine. I believe he will make a wonderful and loving companion to the right family or individual.   In our busy and hectic "dog house"  Mikey will learn the ropes while he's here - he'll also learn what I already know about him, that he's one wonderful dog!

When Mikey can finally relax and rest easy I'll be sure to let him know that he's helped to restore my faith that I truly am doing the right thing -  helping to make the difference for "just one more dog".  As the saying goes "saving one dog won't change the world, but the world will surely change for that dog".
